Happy Holiday
All of us at PHAN would like wish all of you and your families a happy holiday season and a great year ahead. The office will be closed from December 25th – January 3rd and we will re-open on January 4th, 2010. The next e-news bulletin will be sent on January 15th, 2010.
Client Holiday Party
On December 12, PHAN held a holiday party for our support program clients and families at the Monte Carlo Inn in Mississauga. We had over 70 individuals attend and everyone had a great time mingling, singing, dancing and eating. The kids were able to entertain themselves at a crafts table.

Seminar on Autism
CAM-D – Canadian Association of Muslims with Disabilities invites families to attend a Seminar on Autism to learn about the basics about the diagnosis, services available, funding, and what services Kerry’s Place offers in Peel and Halton. The seminar is on Wed. Dec. 30, 2009 from 7:00 pm. to 9:00 pm at ISNA – Islamic Centre of Canada, 2200 South Sheridan Way, Mississauga. Childcare/onsite support for family members with disabilities and refreshments provided. RSVP: Dec. 23 by email to camd@camd.ca.
Canada’s Top 20 under 20
Do you know someone under 20 who is a leader, innovator or achiever? Nominate him or her for a Top 20 under 20 Award. Youth in Motion is once again celebrating young Canadians who have demonstrated a significant level of innovation, achievement and leadership through the Top 20 under 20 Awards and Mentoring program. The Mathieu Da Costa Challenge
The Mathieu Da Costa Challenge is an annual writing and artwork contest that is open to youth between the ages of 9 and 18. The Challenge encourages young Canadians to embark on their own personal voyage of discovery by learning about the contributions that Canadians of different backgrounds have made in building our country. Participants submit an original piece of writing or artwork that illustrates how specific individuals from Canada’s Aboriginal, African and other backgrounds have contributed to the development of Canada. Winning entries are selected from three age groups (9–12, 13–15 and 16–18). For more information on how to participate in the Mathieu Da Costa Challenge, please visit www.mathieudacosta.gc.ca.
RACISM – STOP IT! National Video Competition
Youth between 12 and 20 years of age, are eligible to enter the Racism. Stop It! National Video Competition. They can create a video 45 to 60 seconds long sharing their thoughts on eliminating racism. They can work in a team of up to five people. Their video can feature as many people as they want—include their whole school or members of their community if they have something to say about stopping racism. Square One Youth Centre
On December 15, 2009, the Square One Youth Centre will be moving to its new location at 300 City Centre Drive, Second Floor, Mississauga L5B 3C1. The Youth Centre will continue its culture of youth engagement under the new name of the Nexus Youth Centre. The Community is invited to join them for their grand re-opening on Thursday, January 21st in the Youth Centre’s new location in the Central Library. As part of the celebration we are having an Open House from 1:00 to 5:00 pm and hope that you will be able to attend.
Youth Beyond Barriers
The Youth Beyond Barriers program at Associated Youth Services of Peel currently offers two weekly support groups for LGBT youth aged 12 - 18 in Mississauga and Brampton. They also provide one-to-one support and guidance for youth, as needed. They are now extremely pleased to announce the creation and development of a new group for Trans or gender variant youth. Primary Health Care Program
The East Mississauga Community Health Centre is pleased to announce that the Primary Health Care Program is now open and we are accepting new patients who meet our eligibility criteria. To become a client, please call us to inquire about eligibility, if translation is required, please let staff know at the time of booking an appointment.
Prism
Family Services of Peel and Catholic Family Services Peel-Dufferin have created a new support program called Prism. It aims at tackling the under-identified, under-served and frequently misunderstood issue of men who have been abused in childhood. Men who have been abused in childhood can come forward and get help by calling Prism at 416-301-1196. Prism assures everything will be dealt with in the strictest confidence. Brampton Free Ride Program
St. John Ambulance launches Operation Red nose in Brampton starting on Nov. 27 and continuing through to Dec. 19. Residents who have been out drinking will be able to call 905-459-2440 and get a free ride home from a volunteer. For further information, or to assist with any volunteer positions please contact us.
ESL Classes
The Peel District School Board runs English as a Second Language classes in Mississauga, Malton and Brampton. The Non Credit Adult ESL Classes have qualified instructors at the low cost of $30.00 for a 10-week session. The classes are held in convenient locations in Brampton, Bramalea, Malton and Mississauga with flexible schedules during the day, night and weekends. Region of Peel Human Services Holiday Gift Initiative
We are pleased to report that the Region of Peel Human Services Holiday Gift Initiative is up and running in full swing. Last year 2,011 families received help from the Holiday Gift Initiative, resulting in gifts for 3,300 children – we are hoping to top the number of people we help this year!
